Scout Leader First Aid - Outdoor First Aid Course & Extra Resources

/media/firstaidtips/library/scouts.jpgThe Scout Association has specific first aid expectations for leaders. For everyday meetings and activities, the minimum requirement is First Response, the Scouts’ own first aid training which covers key skills like CPR (including child CPR), trauma, injury and major illness, including sepsis and meningitis.

When Scouts undertake activities in remote environments, where help may be more than a short distance away, Scouts’ policy requires leaders to have a full first aid qualification involving at least 16 hours of regulated first aid training. In practice, this is commonly a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid or equivalent.

You can view the Scouts’ first aid requirements here: https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/running-things-locally/local-teams/volunteering-development-teams/tools-to-support-volunteering-development-teams/first-response/first-aid-requirements-for-scout-activities/

Using your React First - Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid Qualification in Scouting

Your Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid certificate is issued by the regulated Awarding Organisation, ITC First. This means that it meets the Scouts' requirements for a full first aid qualification for remote activities.

You can also use your Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid certificate as 'external first aid learning' instead of the Scouts own First Response course. We have reviewed the content of the Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid course and have identified three gaps in learning which need to be addressed before the First Response skill can be credited. More information on this process here: https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/running-things-locally/local-teams/volunteering-development-teams/tools-to-support-volunteering-development-teams/first-response/guidance/using-external-first-aid-learning/

To support this, we provide scouting-focused factsheets on meningitis, sepsis and dental emergencies, an online knowledge check for these three topics, and a supplementary certificate to upload as additional course content evidence.

If you’re a scout leader, simply let us know when you book your course, and we’ll give you access to these resources so you can meet all the First Response requirements.

How React First Supports Scout Leaders

When you book one of our Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid courses and tell us you are a scout leader, we’ll support you with:

Scouting-focused factsheets on:

  • Meningitis
  • Sepsis
  • Dental emergencies

These factsheets ensure any gaps between external training and Scouts’ First Response content are addressed. You can download the factsheets at the bottom of this page for general reference and to help with preparation.

An online knowledge check - A short multiple-choice test based on the factsheets. It take 5-10 minutes to complete.

A supplementary certificate - issued when you pass the online test for you to upload as additional course content evidence.

How it works

  1. Book your place on a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid course with React First.
  2. Let us know you are a scout leader when booking. We’ll provide access to the factsheets and the online knowledge check.
  3. Complete the quiz at your own pace, ideally before attending the course, so you can focus on practical skills during the training.
  4. Receive your supplementary certificate by email once you pass.

Factsheet Downloads

The factsheets can be downloaded at the bottom of this page for general reference and to help with the quiz.
They are designed to be practical, concise, and scouting-focused, and can be kept as a quick guide for outdoor activities.
