COVID-19 UPDATE - React First Public First Aid Courses in London are Postponed

/media/firstaidtips/library/3.jpgLast week React First took the decision to postpone all our public first aid training courses in London until June 2020. With the situation and the Government guidance evolving quickly it felt like a very difficult decision given the massive impact on our business. It now feels very clear that this was the correct and the only responsible decision to make.

As of writing this on 23rd March 2020, neither the Health and Safety Executive or the Resuscitation Council UK have issued guidance to instruct companies to stop delivering first aid training. However, even with increased cleaning at our venues (if they are still open!) and adaptations to training and assessment methods to reduce the contact between learners it is irresponsible of us to suggest that sitting with and interacting with 12 other people in a training room for one or two days, many of whom will have taken public transport to get to the course does not pose a significant risk to spreading this highly contagious coronavirus.

24th March update: As you all know, we have all been asked to stay at home for the next three weeks and possibly longer.

Some people have been placed in a difficult position as their first aid certificate is due to expire within the next three months and most public first aid courses have been cancelled or postponed. The Health and Safety Executive, the Department for Education and the UK First Aid Awarding Organisations have a solution. In essence they have agreed that anyone whose certificate expires and they are unable to renew because of COVID-19, and they can show the steps that they have taken to renew (i.e. you didn't just forget to renew!) there is a three month extension to the expiry date on your certificate. For example, if your Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work is due to expire on 31/03/2020 it will now expire on 31/06/2020. This guidance comes into effect for certificates expiring on or after 16th March 2020. HSE will review this matter over the coming months and will issue further statements as necessary.

We hope that this approach will become the norm that all other organisations and governing bodies accept.

Full details of the HSE guidance on a 3 month extension to your first aid certificate expiry is here.

If you have a course booked with us over the next few months we will have already been in touch, for courses at the end of May or in June we will see how things are in 6 weeks time and go from there. As soon as it is possible to begin training again we will!

In the months ahead please act responsibly, be kind and keep washing your hands!

Best wishes,
