First Aid at Work proposed course changes

Despite many postponements in the past, it seems as though the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) are going to introduce the new first aid at work training courses by the end of 2008. These would be a 3 day full FAW and a 1 day emergency course.

The HSE have made us aware the following frequently asked questions regarding FAW provision and their response.

Q: Are their any age limits for FAW training?
A: There are no specific age limits. Sucessful completion of the course enables employees to provide first aid in the workplace.  Students on the course will be of working age.

Q: Can someone with a disability become a first aider at work?
A: Employees have to decide, as part of their first aid needs assessment, whether a particular individual will be able to undertake the role.  They will need to be capable of performing all aspects of FAW in accordance with their training.
Similarly, training providers need to be satisifed that a candidate has demonstrated all competencies to a satisfactory standard in order to issue an FAW certificate.

Q: Can the FAW course be delivered over 3 days at the moment?
A: No!
The current course should be completed in no less that 4 days and no more than 13 weeks.  Sessions need to be 2 hours or more.  Refresher FAW should be delivered over no less than 2 days and no more than 6 weeks.

Q: Is an FAW certificate awarded overseas valid in Great Britain?
A: No!
If certificates are awarded overseas it should be made clear that they will not be valid for first aid at work purposes in this country.  Any FAW certificate issued overseas should not bear the providers HSE approval number.
