Dr T. Anstiss, Member of Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, reviews our Sport First Aid Course

“I had the pleasure to review a first class training workshop delivered by React First earlier this month.

What struck me most was the very practical nature of the training, the hands-on skills development sessions, and the passion and enthusiasm of the trainers. They had very in depth subject matter knowledge, provided high quality materials, but most importantly adopted a "coaching" style of training, drawing out and building on the existing knowledge and skills of the audience.

The course focused on the reality of being first on the scene of a potentially serious or life threatening injury and what to do when you have limited resources - which makes it most relevant to pitch side first aid. A systematic approach was taught and assessed, and the audience was fully engaged throughout.

As a doctor having attended mini and youth rugby matches and tournaments over the least few years I have seen a wide range of injuries and have also seen some rather bad first aid practice - including squirting water into a players mouth when they were laying on their back to wash the blood off their teeth, which just resulted in choking. If more people attended courses like this, sports participation would be a lot safer for thousands of people up and down the UK, and serious injuries would be much more likely to be managed effectively and efficiently. Lives might also well be saved.

We need more courses like this!!"
